Patrick and I followed Albany Park with a visit to Avondale, also on Chicago's northwest side. The neighborhood has traditionally had a high Polish population though the 80's brought an influx of Hispanics to the area. In recent years, Avondale has begun to feel the effects of gentrification though still maintains a hold on a distinct "Eastern Europe meets Latin America" culture.

Patrick's contributions can be found here.

This is an ongoing project; Albany Park, Pilsen, & Humboldt Park can be found below. Chinatown will be the next stop on our agenda.

Of all the places I've been, I still have a lot of love for the neighborhoods of Chicago. Each is filled with unique, yet distinct, characters that make exploring the city endlessly fascinating. Upon my return to the Midwest, I enlisted my friend Patrick Burke, the filmmaker behind Poster Boys or: The Art of Mobile Recording, in an ongoing project to systematically document as many neighborhoods as possible. The goals of the project, at least for me, were to gain a better understanding of the city I love so dearly and to be able to showcase these photographs so that others may come to, or renew, their own appreciation, for the patchwork quilt that is Chicago.

.

Pilsen, located on the lower west side, was our first destination.  Patrick's photographs can be seen here.

This project is ongoing.
